In 2008 following a campaign to change school dinners and encourage healthier eating habits at an early age, Jamie Oliver launched his Ministry of Food television series.
Harking back to a simpler time of family meals on a tight budget, the series aimed to get people cooking again without breaking the bank. The name was inspired by The Ministry of Food set up by the government throughout World War II to manage rations and avoid malnourishment during times of shortages.
So it’s fitting that the 3rd centre in the Ministry of Food series is based at Leeds Kirkgate Market, home to the original ministry for Leeds and district.
Offering a range of cookery courses, the Ministry of Food teaches simple dishes using fresh ingredients sourced from the market. The courses cover everything from simple preparation techniques and skills to more complex knowledge about herbs, spices and how to prepare larger meals and complementary dishes.
The courses are reasonably priced and concessions apply for students and those eligible for state benefits. The cost and the location inside Leeds Kirkgate Market are designed to make the courses as accessible as possible, and encourage students to change their shopping habits and become more familiar with the traders and fresh produce, improving eating habits.
The Course is an 8 week one, with one session per week. Each session lasts for one hour and a half. All ingredients and equipment is provided by The Ministry of Food and you even get to take home the food you cook!
Courses are available throughout the week during market opening hours from 9am-5pm. Prices are as follows:
There are three price brackets depending on different financial situations.
- £4.50 per week or £35 for the whole course with a Leeds card 60 extra, leeds card extra, student ID or proof of any means tested benefits
- £7.00 per week or £55 for the whole course with a leeds card 60 or leeds card
- £7.50 per week or £60 for the whole course if none of the above applies
