The plans for this year’s Leeds Loves Food festival on 25-27 May are already underway. Look out for more information as events are announced in the coming months. But it’s not just the bakers and makers that are looking forward to the festival, some of Leeds Market’s traders have been driving the food and drink industry forward for generations and are looking forward to their chance to show off to hoards of hungry shoppers.
Malcolm Leary is one such trader, priding himself on all Yorkshire produce at his shop on Butcher’s Row in Leeds Kirkgate Market. Malcolm is a firm believer in local produce and clearly specifies that everything sold at Malcolm Michaels is local, and always has been, using the same suppliers for 17 years.
Although local his produce does have some exotic heritage with his selection of meats including goat, ostrich, and kangaroo all reared at local farms. If that’s a step too far for your delicate palette he also does a fine selection of chicken, beef, pork and lamb for hearty casseroles and the great British roast dinner and Yorkshire pudding.
This family run company now own a grocery store and another Malcolm Michael’s Butcher but it’s the original store which opened in 1993 that remains the most popular. “We have around ten members of the team now across the business and they are what make the job so enjoyable. Together with the staff and the customers, who have become regular characters and part of our daily lives, there really is no better place to work,” says Malcolm.
After almost ten years trading at Leeds Kirkgate Market, they have become something of local celebrities with regular visits from the Leeds Rhinos, whose training academy they sponsor. They’re also regular topics on JK and Joel’s Radio Aire Breakfast Show, so listen out!
